A Trip From Desert to Forest then Caves

This is a trip happened back in July 2012, before I do photography seriously like now. The reason I want to write about this trip is only because it was an awesome trip. We went from city with traditional culture to a pure white desert, then passed through a city with alien secrets to caves which is underground for thousands of years. I am sure I would go again if I got another chance and I would also take more pictures next time!

Over all break down for the trip:

Day 1 to Day 5

Houston -> El Paso -> Santa Fe -> Alamogordo -> White Sand National Monument -> Alamogordo
-> Lincoln National Forest -> Rosewell -> Carlsbad -> Carlsbad Caverns -> Guadalupe Mountains ->
El Paso -> Houston

After arriving El Paso from Houston, we drove about 6 hours straight to Santa Fe. On the way there, all we can see was clouds and few greens. However, it was quite impressive I must say to see these enormous clouds on top of where we were heading. Maybe I live in city too long?

Santa Fe

Santa Fe is a city with lots of traditional cultures. You can find numbers of churches even the oldest one in the United States which is San Miguel Mission. Besides that, art lovers can also spend a day to check out the street of arts which is Canyon Road. There are many kinds of creativity selling or displaying store by store. During winter time, Santa Fe become one of place famous for snow skiing.

Loretto Chapel

St. Francis Cathedral

The Oldest House

This is the door for the oldest house. It seems like everything here in Santa Fe is "oldest." Anyhow, you can tell from the pictures, it is very small. Sidewalk can barely fit two person at the same time and there are only 1 small room which is the pictures below.

San Miguel Mission

We did not get the chance to take a look in side due to it was closed. But from the pictures we found over there. It is a very small and simple church.

After 1 Day trip at Santa Fe, we headed to White Sand National Monument! Again, there are only clouds and greens on the road.

White Sands National Monument
Website

I can not forget this place. White sand is a real pure white desert with several trails. Most of them are very easy, like some walking and looking around. However, we went to the Alkali Flat Trail without know how tough it is. I personally did not even fully prepared but with my camera equipment. I have never been so happy to see our car on our way back. In the beginning, we were running around, taking pictures, and thought how it was in a real desert. About 1/2 of the trail, my water bottle was empty. When we were at 2/3 of trail, weather turned really bad, and storms were sounding around us. At the time we got back to our car, it began to rain hard. Of course we could not see the beautiful sunset under this weather condition.

I would suggest that bring more than enough water, wearing a hat and sunglasses for sure. The lighter equipment is the better. It might not be this seriously if you want to walk around this trail, but fully prepared is
always better.

Lincoln National Forest
website

We failed to find visitor center of this national forest, and weather was really bad. We ended up just pass through it to Roswell.

Roswell

Roswell, a city famous for aliens. There are tones of stories and pictures evidence supporting that aliens do exist and they have visited  long time ago. Well, it really up to you believe it or now.

Carlsbad Caverns
website

Besides White Sand National Monument, our next major sightseeing is this cave located at Carlsbad, NM. You can go to their website to take a look introduction of this cave. All I want to say is this one is way bigger than the one located at San Antonio, TX. We began with tour, which showed around in the King's Palace, then we walked in bat's cave from surface toward bottom of cave. I think the whole walking was not really a big trouble for me but it was different when I carried my tripod with me. In order to take some pictures in the dark, and flash does not work for sure, all I could do was carrying my tripod all the way with me. However, I am happy about the pictures I got, worth it!

Guadalupe Mountains
website

We did not have much time to go visit this national park. Most of trails also required fully equipment and 6-8 hours of hiking. Too tough for me back then, and hope one day I will have a chance to go there to take pictures. It must be beautiful on the top of highest mountain in Texas!

El Paso

The last stop of our trip, El Paso. I do not think Ciudad Juarez would be a good place to visit, but go around El Pase before we leave should be fine. There are lots of Texas-Max around this city, from building to food. We met a local at Carlsbad Caverns saying that El Paso is a safe place to live. Well, I am not sure about that but I am sure Spanish is a must if you want to live in El Paso.
